Overview

Inform Consulting Engineers was appointed by a major NHS Trust to assess and plan the progressive refurbishment of the dual duct supply and extract ventilation systems serving the Queens Building at Bristol Royal Infirmary.

These legacy systems are integral to the building, with plantrooms, risers and distribution routes embedded in its structure. The strategy had to improve performance, resilience and maintainability while preserving clinical operations, giving the Trust clear immediate priorities and a long-term renewal plan.

Services offered

MEP surveying; ventilation technical review; record drawings; feasibility reporting; fan replacement appraisal; performance specification; contractor coordination; technical advisory support; and phased infrastructure strategy.

Challenge

Access restrictions, existing services and future maintenance requirements made intervention in this complex acute hospital challenging. The Trust needed a technically robust, phased route from urgent remedial work to wider infrastructure refurbishment and renewal.

Solution

Detailed surveys validated existing plant and distribution routes, updated record drawings and reviewed testing and commissioning data. Inform consolidated the findings in a technical report recommending minor remedial works, plantroom refurbishment, ductwork repairs, air balancing, control improvements and longer-term distribution replacement.

Working with specialist suppliers, Inform assessed replacement fans using measured airflow and pressure data to specify modern, high-efficiency units. Replacing the principal supply fans will improve efficiency, reduce maintenance and enhance controllability.

Minor remedial works and fan replacement are progressing, with distribution renewal and wider plantroom refurbishment expected in later phases. Inform continues to support the Trust’s Estates team through technical advice, project management assistance, contractor coordination and review of specialist proposals.
